Is my lack of emotions a sign of depression or some other mental problem?

Astrolabe - Emotions are our inner guidance system. Uber Mind Un, ltd.Lack of emotion is not necessarily a sign of any type of mental issue. While you may not be aware of them, you still have them. In fact it’s not possible to not have emotions. We show our them through our body language. Afterall, every thought creates an internal feeling and every emotion affects some area or areas of our bodies. So, whether you are aware of them or not and even though someone seems emotionless, feelings are still present.

Some of us are just more full of feeling than others.

It’s perfectly “ok” to not have or be aware of emotions. Many people live satisfactory lives without experiencing them. The key is to ask yourself if you are ok with having them or not. If you are, no problem. Lack of emotion may represent a fair of having them or simply not understanding how to use the. If you do not have them but want to, you may want to check in with a counselor who can help you learn about making them available.
The great thing about having emotions is that they are our emotional GPS. They are our inner guidance system. And you can use these inner senses of emotions to be aware of things that don’t appear very clearly if you’re trying to get a picture or sound in your mind.
We all have inner senses as well as external ones. For each external sense that we have there is a corresponding inner sense and a whole lot more. People use certain inner senses to the exclusion of others in order to make sense of different situations. In noting the language someone uses, not their use of descriptive words nouns and verbs which depict sensory information. For instance someone might say, “This is music to my ears. It really resonates with me.” Music, years, and resonates all refers to sound information, and the person using these words is probably processing information by way of sounds.
On the other hand, when someone uses terms such as, “I’m not feeling you. That’s a rough way to go.” Here, feeling and rough referred to emotions and emotional characteristics, where as the individual is processing information on the basis of emotion. Likewise similar sensory clues are available for the other senses which include vision, smell and taste.
Usually emotion is combined with visual or sound/auditory clues as to how a person is processing information inside. Thus while someone may not seem to have emotions you can listen to the language that they use and determine if they are processing information emotionally and how they are processing that information. Their emotions then will show through their verbal language and maybe not their body language.
People who are visually focused tend to look up as they think and speak words characterizing vision: I see, bright, dark, light, “sign”, focus, etc.
Hearing: I heard, sounds like, clear as a bell, etc.
Feeling: I feel you, warm, tight grip, cool, etc.
Without sensory references: think, sense, know, etc.
I hope this sheds some light on your current situation. Another question you can ask yourself is, “Am I ok to not experience emotions. If you would like to you can practice having them which is what you can learn by hanging out with some very emotional people. For the emotionally lorn it can actually be quite fun.

Can Hypnosis and NLP Be Used To Bring Back Emotions?

Hypnosis and NLP have been used throughout the decades to help people who have various levels of emotional difficulties. Whether the emotions are too strong or the emotions are absent both methods can be utilized to bring about desired responses. Thus in the case of an individual who is short on emotions such a person can be probed to find those emotions then have them come back. As a matter of fact in NLP during the coaching process we specialize in getting coaching clients in touch with emotions that they're not aware of. Thus it's just a matter of course. Remember emotions are your inner GPS.

For instance there is a process called Getting Unconscious Signals. During this process, we guide the client through a series of questions where we ask them to ask their subconscious/unconscious minds to give them feelings for "yes" and "no". Once the coaching client is able to get these responses directly from their unconscious mind, they are ready to get in touch with other emotions which are long gone. Learning to trust and be in touch with emotions is one of the keys to making desired changes.

Emotions are also the power with which we make things happen. While someone might not be aware of certain emotions or may feel out of touch with certain feelings there are still emotions going on inside the individual. In fact all of us have the emotions which are repressed that come into play with all the decisions that we are currently making. These varied emotions become part of our learning process and we function based on our understanding of them in our desire to re-create them in varying situations.

While I don’t have access to the specific study, one was done during the 1960s where some researchers cataloged the emotions of many different cultures throughout the world. They came up with 10,000 different emotions. Yes that is true 10,000 different emotions. Now most of us can’t fathom that there are so many emotions. However we’re free to paint our landscape of experience with whatever emotions or feelings that we deem appropriate to each and every situation. We even have feelings about things that we don’t know that we have feelings about. And it may be a feeling that doesn’t warrant having any feelings. That being the case we’ve decided to not recognize certain feelings.

It’s important to be able to blot out feelings. Otherwise we would become overwhelmed. Our conscious mind is very limited in terms of the amount of input that it can handle. That is input coming from inside as well as outside. It can handle approximately 7+ or -2 activities simultaneously, at the rate of about 140 bits of information per second. Contrast this with our unconscious minds ability to handle millions if not billions of bits of information per second.

All of our emotions in varying degrees are very important. We have choice as to which emotions that we choose to be aware of or not. The decision whether to acknowledge a certain emotion or not rests with its significance to us.
